Scottish Council on Deafness

Project Co-ordinator Barbra Wylie, has facilitated 40 counselling awareness workshops all over Scotland – including Dundee, Inverness, Galashiels, West Lothian, Dumfries and Ayr.

While the majority of these workshops are run as independent standalone sessions, Barbra has also visited established groups, such as lipreading classes, hard of hearing groups, tinnitus support groups and an Asian deaf club.  Other deaf and deafblind organisations have invited Barbra to hold workshops for their service users.

Barbra has also been working with younger deaf people to increase their awareness of counselling and, accompanied by a counsellor, spoke to students at Donaldson’s and Motherwell College.

The purpose of the Counselling Awareness Workshops is to increase deaf and deafblind people’s knowledge of counselling, and in turn their resulting confidence when accessing it.

Workshops cover
·    A definition of counselling;
·    Reasons someone may want counselling;
·    How can counselling be accessed;
·    What happens during a counselling session and the counselling process.

Also, those who attend are given information about the counselling services specifically for deaf and deafblind people.

Details of future workshops will be posted in our news section and on our calendar.  If you are involved with a group that you think would benefit from a workshop of this nature, please contact Barbra on Tel/Text 0141 221 2991
