After the Scottish Association for the Deaf was renamed Scottish Council on Deafness, Lilian Lawson took up position as Director.
Since then SCoD has:
- Provided continuing support to the Scottish Lipreading Tutor Training Course;
- Worked with CACDP to produce a Directory of Training Opportunities
- Organised an Information Day for Deaf people to report on the findings of the Scottish Executive’s Report 'Sensing Progress';
- Contributed to the development of Best Practice Standards in Social Work;
- Engaged in a consultation exercise with deaf and hard of hearing people to ascertain their needs;
- Supported the Scottish Parliament debate on the official recognition of British Sign Language.
In addition, sub-committees were set up to look at issues in the following areas:
- Community Care
- Communication
- Health
- Education & Lifelong Learning
- The Cross Party Group on Deafness was set up (4 years before the All Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness in Westminster which only began in 2004)
- The Mental Health & Deaf People Task Group began its work
- Funding was obtained from the Scottish Executive to develop SCoD’s website.
